China’s first dual-fuel methanol bunkering vessel completes first refuelling op in Shenzhen

“Da Qing 268” successfully supplied 200 metric tonnes of green methanol fuel to international container ship “COSCO Shipping Carnation” at Yantian Port.

China’s first dual-fuel methanol bunkering vessel Da Qing 268 “大庆268” on Wednesday (21 January) successfully completed its first refuelling operation of an international vessel at Yantian Port, according to Shenzhen Municipal.

Da Qing 268 successfully supplied 200 metric tonnes (mt) of green methanol fuel to international container ship COSCO Shipping Carnation.

The green methanol used in this bunkering operation was supplied by CIMC Green Energy Low-Carbon Technology (Guangdong) Co Ltd. The company’s green methanol production project in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, commenced operation on 16 December 2025, and is the first bio-methanol project in China to achieve mass production, with an initial annual output of 50,000 mt.

The 7,500 mt capacity newbuilding was built by Shenzhen Fengyang Shipping Co Ltd and will be operated by China Shipping & Sinopec Shenzhen Suppliers Co Ltd.

It features an advanced dual-fuel system that allows for flexible switching between methanol and conventional marine fuel.

“This marks a significant breakthrough for green methanol bunkering services in South China, laying a solid foundation for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to become a world-class green shipping hub,” said Shenzhen Municipal.

Furthermore, this is the first bunkering order for the first domestically built methanol bunkering vessel in China, and also the first bunkering order for a Shenzhen-registered ship at Shenzhen Port, representing a significant milestone.

While promoting LNG as a substitute for fuel oil bunkering, Yantian District has been simultaneously planning and developing alternative marine fuels such as methanol and green ammonia.

In 2025, Shenzhen’s LNG bunkering volume reached 604,700 cubic metres (m3), doubling the figure from 2024 of 301,200 m3.

Shenzhen Municipal said Yantian District is working with Shenzhen Port Group to build a complete ecosystem from green fuel storage and bunkering to ship services.

“With more and more methanol-powered vessels entering operation, Yantian will provide a wider market for green methanol bunkering services,” it added.
