CPN completes Hong Kong’s first SIMOPS green methanol bunkering operation

Dual-fuel container vessel “COSCO Shipping Gemini” was bunkered with 200 mt of green methanol through a ship-to-ship transfer from bunker vessel “DAQING 268” operated by Chimbusco Pan Nation.

The Hong Kong Seaport Alliance (HKSPA) has successfully completed Hong Kong’s first simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) green methanol bunkering at the COSCO-HIT Terminals on Tuesday (10 March), according to Hong Kong-based marine fuel supplier Chimbusco Pan Nation (CPN).

The operation featured the COSCO Shipping Gemini, a methanol dual-fuel container vessel with a carrying capacity exceeding 20,000 TEU. The vessel received 200 metric tonnes (mt) of green methanol through a ship-to-ship transfer from bunker vessel DAQING 268 operated by CPN. The process was completed within five hours.

Mable Chan, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Transport and Logistics, said, “This operation demonstrates Hong Kong’s growing capability as a premier green maritime fuel bunkering and trading centre. We will continue to work with industry partners to diversify our energy portfolio and attract a broader network of green fuel suppliers to the city.

Ivor Chow, Managing Director of Hongkong International Terminals, said, “With shipping lines facing increasingly stringent sustainability requirements, the ability to provide alternative fuelling options has become a key competitive differentiator for ports. Today’s operation positions Hong Kong to support our customers’ decarbonisation commitments.”

Tao Weidong, Executive Director and General Manager of COSCO SHIPPING Holdings Co Ltd, said, “By investing in methanol-enabled vessels, we are future-proofing our fleet whilst supporting our customers’ sustainability goals. This accomplishment highlights the collective efforts of the industry, particularly COSCO-HIT Terminals for its leadership in facilitating and executing Hong Kong’s first such operation.”

Calvin Chung, Director of CPN, said, “This milestone demonstrates CPN’s expanding alternative fuel capacity beyond marine biofuels to green methanol. By integrating our expertise with a robust partner ecosystem, we are securing Hong Kong’s future as a premier green port.”

Hong Kong recently achieved its first green methanol bunkering operation involving the bunkering of 500 metric tonnes (mt) of green methanol and 1,000 mt of grey methanol to the world’s first methanol dual-fuel roll-on/roll-off vessel CM Hong Kong.

In November 2024, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government promulgated the Action Plan on Green Maritime Fuel Bunkering to develop Hong Kong into a top-tier green maritime fuel bunkering centre through five major strategies and 10 actions to achieve the International Maritime Organization’s emission reduction goals.

To achieve the above targets, the Action Plan sets out five green-centric strategies and 10 actions, covering a wide range of areas such as the supply of green maritime fuels, infrastructural support, port emissions reduction, incentive measures, collaboration with the Mainland and overseas, and talent training.

With the timely implementation of the Action Plan, the Government expects that Hong Kong will provide bunkering services to ocean-going vessels powered by green maritime fuels such as LNG or green methanol for over 60 times a year by 2030, involving over 200 000 tonnes of green maritime fuels.
