Yangshan Port sets new record for largest single biomethanol bunkering operation in China

Bunkering vessel “Hai Gang Zhi Yuan” successfully delivered more than 3,640 mt of domestic bio-methanol to container ship “CMA CGM Osmium” at Shengdong Terminal of Yangshan Port.

Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) on Friday (6 March) said Yangshan port has set a new record for the largest single bio-methanol bunkering operation in China.

From 5 to 6 March, bunkering vessel Hai Gang Zhi Yuan successfully delivered more than 3,640 metric tonnes (mt) of domestic bio-methanol to container ship CMA CGM Osmium at the Shengdong Terminal of Yangshan Port and simultaneously completed the loading and unloading of containers.

Shanghai MSA said since Shanghai Port completed the first green methanol bunkering in China on 10 April 10 2024, it has supported 27 methanol bunkering operations, with a total bunkering volume of 90,300 mt.

Among these, seven operations were green methanol bunkering operations, with a total bunkering volume of 17,200 mt.

“Shanghai Port ranks first among major ports worldwide in terms of the volume of green methanol bunkering for ships,” Shanghai MSA added.

According to CMA CGM, with the bunkering operation, CMA CGM OSMIUM has become the first vessel in its fleet to run on bio-methanol.

“Together with our partners Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd (SIPG Energy) and Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd, we are building a biomethanol supply chain designed to deliver at scale – turning ambition into concrete action,” the company added on a social media post.
